Who Was Daemon Targaryen?
Every royal family has one: the brother who’s too dangerous to trust and too useful to exile. Daemon was Jaehaerys the Conciliator’s grandson, wielder of the Valyrian steel sword Dark Sister, rider of the Blood Wyrm, and — depending on which maester you ask — the most dangerous man alive for about thirty years running.
He was also, not coincidentally, the only person in the Red Keep who seemed to be having any fun. Daemon commanded the City Watch of King’s Landing and turned a corrupt rabble into his personal army — the gold cloaks, named for the cloaks he gave them, loyal to him first and the throne second. The smallfolk of Flea Bottom called him “Lord Flea Bottom” and “the Prince of the City.” He returned the affection. This was a man who could make an arrest or start a party with equal enthusiasm, and the capital loved him for it.
The court did not. Otto Hightower spent two decades trying to get Daemon as far from power as possible, and honestly? Fair.
“Heir for a Day”
Daemon’s relationship with his brother Viserys was the axis of his whole life. As the king’s only brother, Daemon was heir presumptive for years — right up until he made one joke too many. When Viserys’s infant son Baelon died a day after being named heir, Daemon toasted the boy as “the heir for a day.” Viserys heard about it. Daemon was stripped of his place in the succession, and the wound between the brothers never fully healed.
Everything Daemon did afterward — the wars, the wives, the scheming — reads like a man trying to build his own throne after being denied the one he was born next to.
The Stepstones: A King of His Own Making
Denied a crown in King’s Landing, Daemon went and took one. From 106 AC he waged a private war in the Stepstones alongside Corlys Velaryon against the Triarchy and their general, Craghas Drahar — the “Crabfeeder,” whom Daemon personally carved in half.
By 109 AC, Daemon was crowned King of the Stepstones and the Narrow Sea, wearing a crown of his own making. Then, in the most Daemon move imaginable, he got bored of it, sailed home, and knelt to offer the crown to his brother. The two embraced. It lasted about a year before the next falling-out, because of course it did.
Three Marriages, One Family Tree Nightmare
Daemon’s love life needs a diagram, which — fortunately — we have:
- Rhea Royce of Runestone, a marriage arranged for politics and despised by both. She died in a hunting accident in 115 AC; Daemon immediately began circling her inheritance like a man who had definitely not been waiting for it.
- Laena Velaryon, daughter of the Sea Snake — this one appears to have been genuine. They flew the Free Cities together on dragonback and had twin daughters, Baela and Rhaena. Laena died in 120 AC after a brutal labor, choosing a dragon’s fire over a birthing bed.
- Rhaenyra Targaryen. His niece. Within months of both being widowed. The court was scandalized; the two of them appeared not to care even slightly. Their sons: Aegon III and Viserys II — both future kings.

The Dance of the Dragons
When Viserys died in 129 AC and the greens crowned Aegon II over Rhaenyra, Daemon became the blacks’ greatest weapon — their field commander, their terror, and eventually their liability. He took Harrenhal without shedding a drop of blood (the castle just… opened for him), orchestrated the war in the riverlands, and avenged little Lucerys by arranging the Blood and Cheese murder of Aegon II’s son — an act so monstrous it poisoned Rhaenyra’s cause even as it satisfied her grief.
Their marriage cracked under the war. When rumors reached Rhaenyra that Daemon had been unfaithful with the dragonrider Nettles, whatever remained between them burned away.
Death at the God’s Eye (130 AC)
And so to the ending, which is — no exaggeration — the single most metal death in the entire legendarium. In 130 AC, Daemon flew Caraxes to Harrenhal and waited thirteen days for Aemond Targaryen and Vhagar, the largest living dragon, to come meet him.
They met over the God’s Eye. The dragons grappled in midair, locked together, falling — and as they fell, Daemon climbed out of his saddle, leapt across the gap between the two beasts, and drove Dark Sister through Aemond’s one good eye. All four of them — two dragons, two princes — plunged into the lake.
Caraxes, mortally wounded, crawled to the shore to die beneath the walls of Harrenhal. Aemond’s body was found years later, still in his saddle, Dark Sister through his skull.
Daemon’s body? Never found. Draw your own conclusions. The singers certainly have.
What Happens to Daemon in HOTD Season 3
Short answer: Daemon is alive at the end of House of the Dragon Season 3 (June 21 – August 9, 2026). The show has not yet reached the God’s Eye duel the books use to end him.
Known (Season 3, eight episodes): Daemon spends the season as Rhaenyra’s enforcer and sword-arm. He is sent to find the rider of Sheepstealer, tracks the dragon down with Caraxes, and ends up deceiving Rhaenyra to protect his own daughter. In the finale, “The Treasons at Tumbleton,” he refuses Daeron and Gwayne Hightower’s offer to divide the realm and is persuaded by Corlys Velaryon to retreat.

The Nettles Question: Book vs. Show
In Fire & Blood, Sheepstealer is claimed by Nettles, a low-born dragonseed with no known Targaryen blood, who ends up in Daemon’s company during the hunt for Aemond (some of the book’s narrators hint at a romance, which the text never confirms). The show does something different: Season 3 gives Sheepstealer to Rhaena, Daemon’s own daughter, and Nettles has not appeared. Daemon’s “find the rider” mission therefore becomes a test of loyalty between his wife and his daughter, a storyline with no book equivalent. Whether Nettles appears in Season 4 is unknown.
